Don't be Deceived, Understand the Proposed Budget Cuts . . . or face losing almost 6.5 teachers in our District!

What are the Proposed Budget Cuts -    In trying to provide the public with the SPJUSD Budget Proposal we could not.  This very important information and the SPJUSD has made the decision to not include it on their official web site.  The only way currently that we are aware of receiving this is to make a request for the Budget Proposal and the cost is $0.25 per page, or an appointment to loook at it at the County Offices.  It would seem as though this is one document that should be included for the public but is not.

In brief and per the Sierra Booster, dated March 4, 2011, Volume 61, Number 11, the Distict's budget proposal shows reduction and elimination of particular kinds of service for the Sierra County Board of Education and Sierra-Plumas Joint Unified School District 2011-2012 school year.  There was discussions in a closed session suring a special board meeting on Tuesday, February 22, 2011 at the Loyalton Elementary School.

The Sierra County Board of Education Resolution No.10-005 states the intention to dismiss:
Grades K-8 Classroom Teaching Position (Opportunity Program) - 1.0 F.T.E.
    Grades K-12 Special Day Class/Resource Specialist - .9 F.T.E.
The Sierra-Plumas Joint Unified School District Resolution No.10-010 states the intention to dismiss:
    Grades K-6 Self-Contained Classroom Teacher - 2.0 F.T.E.
    Grades 9-12 Classroom Teaching Position:
        Art -                             .41 F.T.E.
        AVID -                          .12 F.T.E. - Advancement Via Individual Determination*
        Drama -                       .12 F.T.E.
        Construction Trades -  .50 F.T.E. - **
        CORE Intervention -    .12 F.T.E.
        ISP -                            .12 F.T.E. - ***
        Science -                      .68 F.T.E.
        Math -                          .34 F.T.E.
        Foreign Language -     .12 F.T.E.

Both resolutions cited reasons were due to reduction in State revenue, loss and/or reduction in program funding, and in part, to declining average daily attendance.

Understanding the terms:
F.T.E. - Full Time Equivalent e.g.(1.0 FTE equal's one full time teacher, .50 FTE equals 2.5 days based on a 40 hr work week, .41 FTE would be a teacher who now would only work 59% of the work week based on a 40 hour work week)
* - Designed to help students in the middle of their school education prepare & succeed in colleges & universities.
** - Skilled trades in a variety of construction occupations
*** - Independent School Placement

QUESTIONS TO ASK OUR COUNTY/DISTRICT ADMINISTRATORS AND BOARD MEMBERS
How many FTE administrator positions does the SPJUSD (including County) have?
How many of those administrators are being cut?
ANSWER: NONE!

WE AGREE
- WE NEED TO CUT OUR BUDGET
WE DO NOT AGREE - ON HOW THE DISTRICT PLANS ON DOING IT

We have gone down this path before - the Budget Proposal that was provided by SPJUSD show teachers cuts only.  Our community cannot afford to lose teachers and the classes they teach.  A loss as this will hurt us as a community, our kids and our grandkids for years to come.
